ZZ Black

A variety of the famous green ZZ, this plant has the darkest purple, almost black leaves, and is one of the easiest plants to care for, it can live happily in the lowest light and is extremely drought resistant. To top it off, it's an excellent air purifier.

Time is what makes the black ZZ plant turn dark. Fresh leaves start out bright green and gradually turn black with time.

It may take up to two months for a stem and leaves to turn black completely, although usually it gets dark after six weeks.

• Watering in summer – ZZ black thrives when watered a small amount every two weeks.
• Watering in winter – this dormant phase means the ZZ plant only needs water once a month.

Allow the soil to dry out entirely before watering again. ZZ has tuber-like rhizomes that store water. Letting the soil dry out fends off root rot.
